The Meramec River Basin Nutrient Monitoring Project is a volunteer based initiative coordinated by the Missouri Stream Team, Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program. The Meramec River Basin is one of the most biologically significant river basins in mid-continental United States and like many rivers has experienced significant human impact, especially in the highly urbanized section that flows through the St. Louis area. The objectives of the monitoring project are to collect monthly orthophosphate, nitrate, and turbidity data throughout the watershed for one year to identify and rank segments with higher nutrient concentrations; and to bring focus to areas with higher nutrient levels.
